The Best Thing A Woman Can Be Is A Singer

Before you read the title and start jumping to conclusions, that is not my opinion nor statement.  However, these were some very powerful words that were spoken to our friend, singer, Julie Dexter, that changed her life forever.

If you are a true "SPEAKER" that follows When We Speak TV, you will know that Julie Dexter was the first live music concert I attended when I moved to Atlanta in 2008.  Back then, I wasn't really familiar with the Atlanta music scene, nor any of the indie artists in the city but I was invited by my business partner, Chet, so I went......and to make a long story short, I have been a Julie Dexter fan ever since.  

I always make the reference that Julie Dexter is my Beyonce.  What I mean by that is, although I would love to meet Beyonce, I get just as anxious when I see Julie Dexter, as I would if I saw Beyonce!  I really admire Julie because not only is she a great vocalist but she is also a supporter of When We Speak TV!  You may remember that a few years back, I sat down and spoke with her at the release of her album, New Again.  

Since then, she and I have definitely seen one another on several occasions at musical events like the Atlanta Jazz Festival....and of course this year, she performed at the Jazz In The Alley Concert Series, which When We Speak TV is an official partner!

ABOUT JERMAINE SAIN

Jermaine Sain is the host/ creator of a talk show called When We Speak.  After exiting the U.S. Army in 2003, as a Medical Sergeant, Jermaine began pursuing a career in music after he auditioned for American Idol in 2005, in Austin, Texas.

In 2008, Jermaine moved to Atlanta where he has had the opportunity to provide backing vocals for Kem (Grammy nominated R&B Singer) Heart (Rock and Roll Hall of Fame), and Barry Manilow, as well as for companies such as Pink Ribbon Story Foundation and Verizon Wireless. He made his first music video appearance in Kem's Glorify The King.

A certain new and exciting credibility is lended to bands when they transition from playing locally to performing at venues around the country. If you’re new to playing music, you might think that touring is an experience filled with non-stop fun, venues filled to the brim with adoring fans, and luxurious accommodations, but the dramatized version of tour portrayed in movies and TV rarely reflects the massive challenges that come along with heading out on a national tour as a small band. If you want a more realistic picture of what it’s like to head out on tour with an unknown band, think sparsely attended shows, strained finances, and sleeping on floors.

But even with the general stress and discomfort that touring usually brings for smaller acts, it’s an absolute necessity if you want to be taken seriously by fans, press, and labels. There’s no better manifestation of an artist’s hopes and aspirations than seeing them set out for a long national first tour for the first time.

2016 Atlanta Jazz Festival: JOI (@JoiGilliam)

JOI

As a trailblazer and a maverick, the genre-morphing singer, songwriter and producer, JOI, has always been ahead of the mainstream cultural and artistic landscape. Debuting with the 1994 critically acclaimed The Pendulum Vibe (EMI), JOI and producer Dallas Austin created a sharp, kaleidoscopic set of unclassifiable jams (later dubbed ‘Neo-Soul’) powered by lead single "Sunshine & the Rain". An all-black, all-woman version of the album cut “Freedom” was issued for Mario Van Peebles’ film, “Panther”. Mary J Blige, Queen Latifah, En Vogue and a teenage Aaliyah were among the 60 plus vocalists. 

By the end of the decade, JOI became one of the first black models in a major Calvin Klein ad campaign (CK One). She independently released the adventurous Amoeba Cleansing Syndrome album, backed by indie rock collective Fishbone, and worked on projects for the likes of Goodie Mob, Outkast, Curtis Mayfield, George Clinton and others.

During the 2000's, JOI was signed to the Universal label that produced the funky effort Star Kitty’s Revenge, her most commercially viable album to date. Star Kitty’s Revenge featured signature tunes “Lick” and “Jefferson St. Joe”, an ode to her father Joe Gilliam, the NFL’s first black starting quarterback. JOI was asked to join R&B super-group Lucy Pearl alongside Raphael Saadiq, soon after.

 In 2006, she independently released the emotional tour-de-force; Tennessee Slim Is The Bomb under her Joilicious Records imprint. 

The last decade has found JOI free of the fledgling label system and fully immersed in Artisan Polishing, DJ'ing, and vocal work on productions by Max Martin (Ariana Grande, Tori Kelly), Polow Da Don (Monica) and others.  A 20th anniversary international tour with Outkast preceded her own #20YearsOfJOI run and a 2015 European tour with D'Angelo & The Vanguard. Her highly anticipated fifth solo effort Rebekkah HolyLove's Salvation Symphony is due for independent release later this year.

A Day In The Park with Carmen Rodgers

Independently releasing her debut cd in 2004, Carmen Rodgers has become one of the bright stars of the Indie Soul Movement.

Once a background vocalist for soul singer N'dambi, Carmen is now out front and becoming an Indie Music Star.
Her songs have been in rotation on VH1 Soul, Music Choice, and many others.

I was blessed to speak with Soul Singer Carmen Rodgers on When We Speak. Carmen was full of positive energy and very encouraging.... I see why she is such a musical flower....because she has the sweet personality to match!
