Facebook Partners with ELEVATE to Install Five Voter Awareness Murals in Atlanta

News Source:  OCA Atlanta

The Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs’ (OCA) annual ELEVATE public art festival recently partnered with Facebook to install five new murals, which are a part of this year’s festival — presented digitally on the ELEVATE website, Facebook, and YouTube from October 4 to 10.

With 2020 marking a pivotal election year, Facebook launched the “Voting is Voice” campaign and set a goal to register 4 million new voters during the largest voter drive in U.S. history. Facebook’s partnership with the OCA and ELEVATE was a natural fit as the festival will explore the concept of social justice and equity through this year’s programming.

For the “Voting is Voice” campaign, five artists from across the U.S. created original artwork commissions in response to the prompt “Voting is Voice.” Within this theme, each artist explored voting as a powerful tool of the personal and collective voice, the importance of a diversity of voices to a healthy society, the powerful impact of personal narratives as vehicles for change, and our collective responsibility to acknowledge and amplify a broad spectrum of voices. These five murals are a part of Facebook’s push to increase voter engagement and participation during this election year.

Each mural will feature the artist’s bio, Q.R. codes, and URLs that direct viewers to Facebook and Instagram’s Voting Information Center, where they can find more information on the 2020 U.S. election and a quick and easy way to register to vote.

In addition, the murals encourage public interaction through compelling, relevant design & digital features that create multiple levels of access for every member of the community.

List of Facebook Murals and Locations

  • “You Gotta Vote” by Edie Fake at 3020 Campbellton Rd. SW, Atlanta, GA
  • “Your Vote Matters” by Jamilla Okubo at the Grove Park Theater, 1576 Donald Lee Hollowell Pkwy
  • “Your Vote is Gold” by Tiff Massey at Scarlett Loves Rhettro, 432 Ponce De Leon Ave
  • “The Vote is Dope” by Troy Lamarr Chew II at the Mall West End, 850 Oak Street SW

ELEVATE Art Festival presents Music for your Soul

Royal Krunk Jazz Orkestra
Royal Krunk Jazz Orkestra
This year’s ELEVATE Art Festival examines arts and culture through the lens of our changed reality due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We have experienced racial unrest, economic recession, isolation due to social distancing, and a divisive political climate. The festival theme is Equity, Activism, Engagement, and through our programs we seek to provide hope, inspiration, and food for your soul. Join this year’s free virtual programs from Sunday, October 4 through Saturday, October 10.  It’ll be streaming live via Facebook, YouTube and website. Check elevateatlart.com for details.  Below is the music lineup.

Sunday, October 4

12:00 pm - In Response to the Moment, a Curated Soundtrack. DJ Salah Anase created a soundtrack for ELEVATE that responds to this moment in time. By blending his signature rare grooves, house music, and electronic Afrobeat with the voices of movements for equality, both past and present, Anase delivers a soundtrack that helps us reflect and vibrate higher.

Tuesday, October 6

11:00 am – 5:00 pm - Atlanta Jazz Sessions. The Atlanta Jazz Festival was canceled this year but the Office of Cultural Affairs created a new program called Atlanta Jazz Festival Sessions, which gave Atlanta jazz artists the opportunity to perform virtually for thousands of viewers via the festival’s social media platforms. We’re sharing some of those great performances during ELEVATE, so you can enjoy a taste of the Atlanta Jazz Festival!
7:45 pm - Russell Gunn and The Royal Krunk Jazz Orkestra, “Live at the Rialto.” The jazz big band, Royal Krunk Jazz Orkestra featuring Dionne Farris, performed a live, socially distanced concert for the Blue Note New York, produced by the Rialto Center for the Arts and GSUTV.  Join is for this special version which includes bonus footage of bandleader and trumpeter Russell Gunn discussing his work, Atlanta musicians, and jazz education. Russell Gunn is one of the most prolific musicians of our time. Gunn has produced two GRAMMY-nominated recordings, Ethnomusicology volumes 1 and 2. His latest album with RKJO, Pyramids, is dedicated to the ancient African pyramid builders.

Thursday, October 8

12:00 pm - Les Nubians: Nü Revolution (music video). Since 1998, Les Nubians has attracted a global fanbase with its blend of African music, hip-hop and jazz. They have also been outspoken advocates of equity and anti-oppression. In response to recent uprisings around the globe, Helene and Celia Faussart remixed their 2011 Nü Revolution video. The words are timeless, but the new images of protest, frustration, hope, and love take viewers on a different journey.

Friday, October 9

7:30 pm - Toshi Reagon and Mark Anthony Neal in Conversation. Join us for a discussion about the music of movements, their impact, and how (or whether) contemporary artists are taking up the mantle of providing hope and inspiration for today’s movement.
Described by Vibe magazine as “one helluva rock’n’roller-coaster ride,” Toshi Reagon is a one-woman powerhouse. The singer-songwriter-guitarist has moved audiences with her hold-nothing-back approach to rock, blues, R&B, country, folk, spirituals, and funk. She has shared stages with Lenny Kravitz, Nona Hendryx, Elvis Costello, Ani DiFranco, Pete Seeger, Me’shell NdegéOcello and Marc Anthony Thompson (aka Chocolate Genius). Her performances with her mother, Bernice Johnson Reagon, civil rights activist and founder of the a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock, are legendary.

Freedom Mixtape. Atlanta musicians explored Freedom songs and why they have been instrumental in moving people through struggle. For ELEVATE they chose to perform songs by Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln, Nina Simone, Bob Marley, The Last Poets, and Gil Scott Heron, plus tunes by newcomers Keedron Bryant, D-Smoke and Little Baby. Join us as Julie Dexter, Ali Barr and Brandon Thomas lead us through the first set. Henry Conerway, Tony Hightower, Kenny Banks, Jr. and Kevin Smith walk us through set number two. We reach our destination with the two groups collaborating.

Saturday, October 10

5:00 pm – Gritz & Jelly Butter. After one listen to the explosive Atlanta-based band, Gritz & Jelly Butter, you will become a believer in the "Gritz Revolution" ... the musical revolution that is. The trio of musicians and vocalists perform the perfect blend of old and new songs, while mixing in Gritz & Jelly Butter's originals, to pave the way for a new brand of soul/funk music.

5:45 pm – Kebbi Williams and the Wolfpack. Grammy award winning tenor saxophonist Kebbi Williams is one of contemporary music’s whirlwind improvisers. The imaginative multi-instrumentalist/ composer/producer/arranger/teacher resists categorization. His innovative sound blends Avant-garde jazz, hip-hop, Afro-beat, gospel, electronica, classical and fiery rock, which he interweaves with passion and edge.

6:30 pm – Encore performance of Russell Gunn and The Royal Krunk Jazz Orkestra “Live at the Rialto”

7:30 pm – Encore performance of Freedom Mixtape
